First hockey of the Season - a win!
The 1st XI made an impressive start to the term, defeating Foremarke Hall by 5 goals to 2. BG could have been ahead within a few seconds of the start, Will Manners effort just sliding past the post. It was not too long before the ball did cross the goal line, Manners himself opening the scoring. Two further goals came before half-time from Milo Lakin who was in excellent form throughout. Ollie Rogerson put in a devastating display at the heart of the mid-field and Hugo Swaby marshalled his defence like an old hand.
In the second half, Manners' bobbling effort evaded several desperate attempts to keep it out but, alas, it dribbled over the line, much to Will's delight. Lakin completed his hat-trick, showing superb individual skills as he cut a swathe through the Foremarke defence. Carlos Ribas made a promising BG hockey debut and Harry Smith was in fine form between the sticks.
Last week, after just one day of term, the 1st XI played in the annual tournament at Dean Close. The highlight of the afternoon was the recognition of Ollie Rogerson as the player of the tournament, in recognition of which he was presented with a new Mercian hockey stick. This was indeed an honour, particularly given that some of the top hockey schools in the country were represented.
