Good things come to those who wait!
The First XI hockey team played Princethorpe College on Wednesday afternoon. The girls were confident and maybe a little too relaxed in the first half. We were taken aback at how strong the oppositions defence were and, although we had most of the possession, we just could not get past them to get the shots in.
The Princethorpe goal keeper was very strong and managed to clear away many accurate attempts by our attack, Sky, Mimi, Ella and Hannah. Then, as often happens, an opening in our midfield saw their girls take advantage and score a goal. This made our girls pick up the pace and suddenly we had an equaliser scored by Eleanor. It would have been a fair score to go into half time on a draw but Princethorpe took advantage again of our complacency in defence and got a second goal just before the whistle.
After a few choice words at half time the BG girls went onto the pitch with a new attitude and they began to play their usual strong and competitive game. Suddenly the girls were playing as a team and the pace and standard of hockey picked up. Some excellent collaboration between the wings, defence and midfield produced three more wonderful goals and we managed to gain the victory. A particular mention has to go to Anastasia who tracked back and forward throughout the match.
