Conquering the Dragon!
The Colts built on their improvements against Maidwell by getting it right in miserable weather on Saturday afternoon. In freezing rain and soaking fields, with games being called off around them, the Colts pulled out all the stops to secure the best result and most polished performance of the season, winning by a conversion but controlling the second half.
The score was far from text book: the forwrds, going from strength to strength, won a put in against the head and the ball finally reached the wing. Charlie Bastable, frustrated at his inability to make progress going forwards in the wet, set off across the field and somehow managed to elude tackles until he turned. Weeks of practising passing from the ground paid off, and Charlie offloaded to Lucas Lakin; interplay between the Colts’ two quickest backs was always going to be hard to stop. Josh Harris converted.
The Dragon did not lie down and came back early in the second half. In terrible weather, their unfortunate kicker missed his target and that scoreline did not change again. It could have, though.
Jack Rosser scooped a pass off his toes (fantastic handling for a prop) to charge at the Dragon defence. He offloaded in the tackle but it was adjudged to have gone forward, frustrating a delighted side who had turned to retire to half-way. Charlie had several good runs and, in the dying seconds, Josh Harris had a run before being pushed into touch. The line-out was not taken: the final whistle went and the BG boys had beaten a team who often set the standard for rugby in the region.
If these Colts can remember what they have learned this season, they should inject some competitiveness into their teams next year. It has been a season of overcoming setbacks, and the Colts have certainly grown over the last few months. They have crowned it with a fantastic result and should remember the season fondly.
