1st XI v Bedford

BG 1st XI v Bedford 1st XI

9th June 2007

On a glorious Saturday afternoon the 1st XI travelled to Bedford to play one of its toughest fixtures of the term.

Tom Barker won the toss and elected to field first. The opening bowlers D Craven and C Hurley put the ball on a length and asked questions of both the batsman and the Bedford wicket which had a mind of it’s own!

D Craven took the first wicket quickly, then followed an outstanding spell by C Hurley who took two crucial wickets and so nearly had a hat-trick in one over!

W Richards and R Assheton then came in to the attack and bowled straight and on the money! A huge amount of pressure was created by our strong fielding and consistently straight bowling. Bedford were rattled and this caused some crazy running between the wickets, resulting in run-outs by W Richards and a fantastic run out by D Craven. What a throw!

After 30 overs we had bowled Bedford out for 96 with the best of the bowlers being C Hurley taking 4 wickets and R Assheton taking 2 wickets.

After a strategy meeting at tea we decided to split the game into thirds and set ourselves a total for each 10 overs. H Bletsoe and C Hurley took to the crease and C Hurley was very shortly on his way back after a ‘jaffer’ from the Bedford captain.

H. Bletsoe (6) and R. Assheton began to eat away at the Bedford total until Bletsoe played at one too early and was caught at mid-on.

Skipper Barker joined Assheton and batted very maturely; with a required run rate of 3.2 both batsman waited for the bad ball and dealt with it in the correct manner!

Richard (30) and Tom(28) went on to hit the winning runs in style. The end result was an 8 wicket win with 7 overs to spare.

This was a great result and I was delighted with the mature way in which we approached the game and picked the runs off without throwing our wickets away.

I am pleased to announce from their performance and commitment to Cricket over the season, thus far, that Richard Assheton and Tom Barker have been awarded their full Cricket colours and Charles Hurley has been awarded his half colours.
