Double success at East Area Athletics Meeting

200 metres
On Thursday, 38 athletes attended the East Area athletics meeting with the ambition of qualifying for the National Finals at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on Monday 2nd July. All were enthusiastic and there was a strong feeling of optimism as many of the athletes had previously achieved the national standard needed to go toBirmingham and just needed to produce it on the day. 46 schools attended the meeting and the level of competition was high.
There were many notable performances in the morning with Cosima Berry reaching the hurdles final with the fastest time but was unable to match her feat in the final, finishing 4th. Connor Doughty, Sam Summers and Denis Kostyan all finished fourth in the javelin, shot and discus respectively. Our distance runners performed well on the track and all finished in respectable positions. The first notable success of the day came from Roddy Giles in the Under 12 discus when he achieved an excellent 3rd place finish narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Nationals. This performance kick-started a run of excellent performances on both the track and the field. Charlie Bastable (competing a year young) produced a great run in the 200m to qualify as 5th fastest for the final and William Richards matched this performance with a fantastic effort and qualified as 3rd fastest for his final. Whilst this was taking place on the track, Genevieve Barton was improving on her 3rd place last year and produced a series of strong throws in the javelin to achieve the national standard, finish in second place and be able to attend the Nationals next month. Meanwhile, Lukas Lakin (another Under 11) was excelling in the Under 12 Long Jump. He produced a personal best distance of 4.17m in finishing 2nd and qualifying for the Nationals.
Soon after these performances, the rain curtailed the meeting much to the disappointment of those athletes waiting to perform. Unfortunately, the 200m finals were not run and therefore Charlie and William were unable to improve on their qualifying positions.
We must now wait to see if the times, distances and heights (achieved by the athletes this term) submitted are enough for these athletes to qualify for the Nationals.
Well done to all athletes who attended the meeting and best of luck to Genevieve and Lukas at the Nationals and let’s hope that others will be joining them!!
