Sports Day 2007

After two postponements, Sports Day was able to take place on Wednesday morning. It had becoming a bit of a frustrating period of time after having such beautiful weather during Heats week only for the weather to turn poor on the Saturday. Heats week had provided many close races and those that missed out on the finals on Sports Day did so by the narrowest of margins. One record was broken during Heats Week and that was by Lucille Steward in the Under 14 Triple Jump where she broke the previous record by 25cm and posted a new record of 9.00 metres. When Sports Day finally did get underway after two postponements, the pupils were enthusiastic and were able to produce many pleasing performances and set new personal bests. Two records were broken and one was equalled on the day. Eleanor Lewis smashed the Under 12 1500m record by knocking nearly 30 seconds off the time, Lukas Lakin set a new Under 10 100m record of 14.6 and in the relays, the Under 10 Mountbatten girls team equalled the record set by their older section members of 68.8 seconds. The individual competitions were very close affairs with several athletes in contention of winning their age group and there were a few upsets in the individual events which made the results even closer. In the boys Under 14 competition, Nick Phanphensophon gained the highest field event score and shared the Winterton Cup for the highest track total with Richard Assheton. As a result, Nick won the overall Victor Ludorum with a grand total of 24 points out of a possible 24. In the girls’ competition, Genevieve Barton won the field events competition with wins in the Long Jump and Javelin, Lucille Steward won the 100m and 200m to win the Sue Oliver cup for the track events. Lucille was the winner of the Victrix Ludorum with a total of 23 points just ahead of Genevieve on 22. In the Under 12 competition, Marcus Wong won the Wesamael Cup for the boys with 22 points, winning the Hurdles, High Jump and Discus. Ellie Lewis won the girls event with a maximum of 24 points as she won the 800m, 1500m, Long Jump and Discus. Oceane Steward and Lukas Lakin won the Under 10 competitions with excellent performances in gaining 23 and 24 points respectively. Oceane won the 100m, 200m and rounder’s ball while Lukas also won the sprints as well as the long and high jump events. In the overall competition, Mountbatten were able to retain the title that they won last year, with Churchill in second and Nelson in third. Well done to all those competed and we will hope for better weather next year! CJH
