Colts A win at Warwick

The Colts A began to put into play the techniques they have been learning at practice.

After disappointing results against Warwick last year, the Colts A lined up against Warwick’s B side. The side chose the opening few minutes to finally implement the game plan and techniques they had been practising for weeks: rucking and mauling improved and the ball made its way to Charlie Bastable on the left wing who continued his record of scoring in every game. Having seen the plan work, the team repeated to the same effect and the game was largely settled in the first few minutes. Bilton scored six tries before half time, Warwick’s unfortunate Bs unable to contain the speed of Bilton’s outside backs. Josh continued to convert methodically, nailing 5 from 6.

At half time, some replacements were put on by both sides which balanced the teams out (Warwick had a few A side players in reserve) and this proved a fairer contest, the teams scoring a try each.

The Colts can feel pleased with their forward play and the early runs by the backs. The backs also held their shape better and the defensive strategies were more evident - was the half term break what the boys needed to get it right? We were still sometimes guilty of not passing early enough: as often happens when a team takes an early lead, everyone thinks it must be easy to run through. It is not; the tries come from good team play rather than individual penetration.

It is always good to win at Warwick, and Bilton should aim to take them on like-for-like as the game develops at BG.
