Girls can hold their heads up high.

The girls 1st XI played their first hockey match of the term against Rugby School Under 14B team. On arrival, they all took in the size of the pitch having only practised on Monday evenings in the Sports Hall so far this term. The majority of the team was made up of girls returning for their second season in the 1st XI after making strong impressions last year. The team was bolstered by a selection of 5th form making their debuts for the 1st XI.

The game started slowly with the girls a little tentative and unwilling to get stuck in, especially some of the younger members who were two years younger than the opposition, but this gradually disappeared as the half progressed. Unfortunately, a momentary lapse in marking at the back enabled Rugby to snatch the lead and, despite a succession of short corners, the girls could not force an equaliser before half time.

A re-shuffle and change of formation at half time, partially due to injuries sustained and partially to create more attacking options, saw the girls dominate for long periods of the second half. Unfortunately, the equaliser did not arrive due to some resolute defending and a lack of fortune in front of goal. Rugby added a second late on in the game.

Despite the defeat, the girls should be proud of their performances and there were positive signs which they can take with them in the next few games of this term and then into next term. The next match is against Oundle after the exeat.

1st XI squad: Brooke Millhouse, Helen Francis, Charlotte Newman, Helen Bewicke-Copley, Sasha Worrall, Constance Krarup, Cosima Berry, Genevieve Barton, Alannah O’Donnell, Hannah Hawkesley, Eleanor Lewis, Hannah Brindley, Genevieve Hirst, Poppy Hudson.
