Remembrance Sunday 2007

The anniversary of the Armistice coincided this year with Remembrance Sunday. The sixth form pupils and their parents were in attendance to commemorate those who made the supreme sacrifice.

In the service, led by Rev’d Clive Harper, honorary School Chaplain, the choir sang a setting of John McRae’s poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ and the Coventry Litany of Reconciliation, as well as leading the hymns ‘I vow to thee my Country’, ‘O God our Help in ages past’ and ‘Lord for the years’. Sixth form pupils led the prayers, readings and poetry, and had prepared a large wreath of poppies with their reflections on war and conflict. A dignified minute’s silence was introduced by the headmaster reading Binyon’s poignant words ‘They shall not grow old’ followed by James Baragwanath playing the ‘Last Post’. After the silence, James played the Reveille.

In his sermon, Rev’d Clive Harper reminded us of the need to remember, and exhorted the youngsters to keep the tradition alive in years to come. He suggested that we need symbols to remember- the poppy for example, and reminded us that Jesus gave the symbols of Bread and Wine to remember him- as Christians the world over do in the Eucharist.

The collection will be sent to the Royal British Legion.
