Colts A lose at home to the House

Winchester House visited Bilton Grange to continue the old rivalry and left the victors.

Bilton contested the game courageously, showing more of the shape and discipline that first appeared against Warwick last weekend. It was not enough: Bilton had a player out of position as a result of an injury that opened a gap for Winchester House’s first try after which an uphill battle became a bridge too far. Down 14-0 at half-time, Bilton Grange had seen little clean possession and hoped that improvements in the second half might see them turn things around. It was not to be: when the backs finally got clean ball, they took it statically and lost ground to a determined House defence. Winchester managed to score a further three tries in the second half, and convereted all to win 35-0.

While the breakdown was fairly evenly contested, set piece remained a problem for BG, getting turned enough to compromise the quality of the possession received by the BG backs. Despite work on the lineouts this week, clean ball is again not guaranteed. Most importantly, the backs must work at taking the ball going forward and breaking the gain line, or otherwise we are doing the opposition’s job for them.

Overall, the team are definitely improving and we hope to scalp some of the big sides we play before season’s end.
