Played well at Maidwell
The Colts A played probably their best game of the season, finally getting into defensive shape and putting pressure on Maidwell. In turn, the Maidwell side were under the cosh, forced into handling errors. Maidwell are a quality side, getting a draw at Winchester and close to Spratton, with several strong forwards. That Bilton limited them to three tries speaks volumes about the improvements. A win would be better, but the Colts can feel proud of the progress they have made.
The Colts improved both in attack, defence and their ability to get hold of the ball. Scrummaging and rucking improved and the Colts also took advantage of some wayward throwing in at the line-out by their hosts to add to the pressure. When they got it clear, Bilton used the full width of the pitch to stretch Maidwell, with all the wingers (sub Charles Ernest had a good run) looking dangerous. They kept the ball alive beautifully, and used quick ball to attack. In defence, the team also showed progress, holding their shape and forcing the Maidwell side into errors.
But for some mistakes, it could have been different. A penalty for fly-hacking led to Maidwell’s first score, and another penalty led to Maidwell “tossing it to the big bloke”: a missed tackle on him resulted in the hosts increasing their lead. Maidwell put the game out of reach in the second half, after which Bilton did all the running and no scoring.
With the team having finally implemented what they have been taught, one hopes it is not too late to use it successfully.
