1st XV battle with Abberley

After the long journey to Abberley Hall, it is always hard to start well and Abberley put the team under considerable pressure from the start, eventually scoring to go 5-0 ahead. BG then came storming back and, with an overlap beckoning, looked set to score. Unfortunately, an intererception in the 22 led to a breakaway score. To their credit, the 1st XV did not let their heads drop and came back once more, dominating play for a long period with some excellent rucking. Slick handling in the backs and excellent support play finally brought a score wide out on the right for skipper Charles Hurley.

The second half brought more sustained Abberley pressure and, with the rucks becoming rather untidy, BG struggled to secure good ball. Our hosts used the ball well in the backs, using their strong running centre to good effect, but BG were up to the task. Will Richards defended tirelessly and Marcus Wong caught the eye out on the wing with some try saving tackles. In the end, however, the pressure told and Abberley scored again. BG pressurised their hosts once more and worked James Walker into space and what looked like a certain try, only for the move to break down with a knock-on. As the match started to slip away, Abberley scored once more at the close to leave BG with their first defeat of the season. This was, however, a useful test after the recent easy wins and, on another day, could well have gone our way. The whole team was able to leave with heads held high but they will all be aware that there are improvements to be made when training resumes.
