Colts C v Abberley Hall
On Saturday 6th October, the Colts C XII entertained Abberley Hall for our second match of the season. We scored first through Cameron Greiff after five minutes and three minutes later Daniel Spencer had doubled our lead. Both scores were breakaway tries where our boys took advantage of the available space and managed to avoid opposition attempts to stop them. On 15 minutes, Abberley Hall scored a try similar to our own, their man running half the length of the pitch to score. From our point of view, we now understand that greater responsibility has to be taken so that an opposition player is not left unchallenged by six or seven of our players. Our next passage of attacking play was a super effort from Michael Warriner as he ran half the length of the pitch but just when a further try seemed certain, the ball somehow managed to drop to the floor with the opposition line just 2 metres away. On the stroke of half time, another breakaway try by Daniel Spencer extended our lead to 15 – 5 as we headed for the interval. After the break, both sets of boys came out fired up and determined and neither allowed the opposition much time and space to work with. There were to be no more breakaway tries and many more phases of play developed with lots of mauling and some rucking. Our forwards fought very hard to steal the ball and found some success in the mauls. They also generally won their own lineouts and scrums. The backs deserve credit too for not getting sucked in but holding a nice line from which to gain ground. This was another hard-fought and well-deserved victory for the boys and the final score was 15 – 10 to Bilton Grange. Well done to the try scorers: Cameron Greiff (1) and Daniel Spencer (2). The squad: R Bedi, D Corral, A Kefalas, D Uruchurtu, J Marshall, M Warriner, J Eastwood (capt.), D Spencer, C Greiff, J Baragwanath, T Newman, H Qureshi, A Stasinski (res), E Wiltshire (res) and M Johnson (res). Well done to all 15 boys who took part in this match and to those who acted as good hosts. The boys will take many positives from their experience and all squad members are looking forward to the possibility of playing a part in our next match. In the meantime, we acknowledge there are big improvements still to be made, there is far more to come from this squad before the season is over and there will be tough challenges ahead. My thanks go to the parents who have turned out to support the boys so far this season. JMcG,06 10 07.
