Called for a purpose

It was the turn of fifth form children to lead this Sunday’s chapel service, on the theme ‘Called for a purpose’. The readings reflected the life-changing experiences of the Wesley brothers, John and Charles, Mother Theresa of Calcutta and St Paul, that challenged them to leave their former lives and spread the message of God through preaching, hymnody, work with the ‘poorest of the poor’ and evangelism.

In the sermon, the headmaster, deputising for the visiting preacher who was unable to be with us, reflected on our many vocations in life, and how school life and especially the chapel prepare us to face whatever challenges and callings may come our way.

The Chapel Choir sang an anthem to words by Charles Wesley, ‘Rejoice the Lord is King’ set to music by Malcolm Archer, followed by a movement from Handel’s ‘Messiah’, ‘How beautiful are the feet that preach the gospel of peace’. Cosima Berry, Genevieve Hirst and Jack Eastwood also sang the aria ‘Who can express the noble acts of the Lord’ by Charles Wesley’s grandson, Samuel Sebastian Wesley. Hymns included Charles Wesley’s ‘Love divine, all loves excelling’, a hymn from the Iona community “Will you come and follow me” and the well-known ‘I the Lord of Sea and Sky’.

Many thanks to all who contributed to the service in different ways, especially the children of 5S who led readings and prayers.
