Under 10s reach finals

THe Under 10s travelled to the St Anselm’s tournament to make a defence of their title shared last year after a tight final against Grace Deus. They came very close to repeating history.

The boys ran rampant in their first match against Derby, scoring seven tries and shutting out their opponents. The side scored seven unanswered tries. Bilton were sometimes guilty of taking the ball into contact, and using hand-offs, which are illegal at this age level. But for these infringements, Bilton could have posted a bigger total.

Five minutes later, Bilton played their second match against Ranby. In a much tighter encounter, both sides were kept out and the pool was to be decided by the last fixture. Tournament rules were that the outcome would be decided by tries conceded, and when Derby scored, the result became academic. In the event, Ranby won by 6 tries to 1.

Bilton faced Grace Deus in the finals and got off to a wonderful start, scoring within the first minute. The Taylor twins dominated the scrums too, to the point that the referee had to insist that they had to hold back or risk having uncontested scrums. This negated the only clear edge we had and, despite some brave tackling, Grace Deus’ well organized backs were able to run in three tries for a well deserved win. There was plenty of passion, and our boys were distraught at the final whistle.

The team have taken some lessons on board and should approach the Bilton tournament confidently.
