1st XV too strong for Gt. Houghton
For the final game of this half of the term, the 1st XV welcomed Great Houghton to Bilton Grange. With a week of hard work on the training ground behind them, it was pleasing to see both backs and forwards putting what they had learnt into practice. The stifling pressure from the forwards, led by Will Richards, Oliver Robinson and Thomas Falkingham in the back row, quickly created space for the backs to exploit. Marcus Wong again looked threatening out on the wing and the midfield trio of Charles Hurley, Ben Barwell and James Walker constantly looked to set him running at the opposition and a try soon resulted. The pack, led by Sam Bennett, continued to press up the middle and Will Richards, moved to number 8, ran hard and fast for his 2 tries. With Luca Illien scoring out on the other wing after more pressure, this time following up a kick, the match looked over by half time with the score at 26-0.
Changes were made for the second half to try out some new combinations and, with the home referee disallowing 3 ‘tries’, the team had to work hard to increase the score. Great Houghton continued to compete and their outside centre and their number 8 both made ground on occasions. However, BG always came back strongly, punishing any mistakes, and the visitors spent most of the second half deep in defence. In the end, the pressure told and a smartly taken penalty saw the ball moved quickly for James Walker to score wide out on the right. With Luca converting 4 of the 5 tries, the final score was 33-0. There are certainly some stern tests to come after the break, with a string of away matches, but the whole team can be proud of their achievements so far.
