1st XV win again

The 1st XV opened their saason at home against Akeley Wood, a school BG have not played for some years. The home team once again started well, looking organised and effective up front but still not quite able to make the final pass stick every time in the backs. Both wings again saw plenty of ball but were well shadowed by thier opposite numbers. However, with the forwards linking well to build a strong platform, James Walker finally crossed in the centre to put BG ahead, with Luca Illien converting for a 7-0 lead at half time.

The second half saw Akeley Wood move their game up a gear and BG did well to hold out some strong runners. The front row of Seb Jenks, Kaamil Walilay and Sam Bennett again did well but it was Thomas Falkingham who really caught the eye, playing at blindside. Will Richards also ran well with the ball but has yet to be used to maximum effect in his new position, with one storming run from a penalty seeing him cross the line but not manage to touch down. Roddy Giles had a slightly quieter game but bossed his pack around to good effect. Sustained pressure and controlled play amongst the forwards created some space for first Marcus Wong and then Ben Barwell to cross for further scores, one of which Luca converted for a hard earned 19-0 victory. The captain, Charles Hurley, led by example, as ever and it was pleasing to see that all 15 played as a team for their win. To win twice and not concede any points is a very pleasing start to the season and we look forward to the visit of Wellingborough on Wednesday.
