1st XV enjoy the sunshine

1st XV in sparkling form
After another hard session on the training ground, the 1st XV were sent into action against Wellingborough 2nd XV, with the coach demanding a more dynamic start. However, even he could not have anticipated what followed. 2 slick rucks were followed by some neat handling and excellent support play in the backs, ending in a try for Ben Barwell wide out on the right. The visitors, with plenty of size to threaten the home defence, came back into the game strongly but BG had clearly set down a marker. Having absorbed the pressure, the home side then came storming back with a couple of solo efforts from ‘man of the match’ Will Richards. By the time Marcus Wong ran in on the wing to bring the score to 26-0, the visitor’s heads were dropping and the match was effectively over.
Half time brought an opportunity for some new faces, with Ollie Robinson, Charlie Smith, Fabio Gomez and James Webb all coming on. However, attempts to weaken the side had little effect, with everyone playing hard and working well as a team. Ben and James Walker were combining well in the centre, creating space for their wings. Roddy Giles was once again in sparkling form and, by the time he had skipped through the middle for a try and Sam Bennett had crashed over twice from short range, it was time to call it a day. Henry Bletsoe and Charles Hurley both attacked well once again and the edefence was very good througout the team, spearheaded by Will and Thomas Falkingham. With Luca Illien converting 5 tries and Roddy 1, the final score was 52-0 to the home side. There will be harder tests to come but it was pleasing to see so much effective and attractive attacking rugby.
