(This is a twice weekly mail shot on the 1st XI and their achievements….plus it’s free!)

Bilton 1st XI, battle with Bromsgrove U13 A XI and snatch a win!The 1st XI travelled to Bromsgrove to play their first game of the season. The match format was 30/30 win or lose.

Charles Hurley won the toss and we elected to field. D. Craven and C. Hurley opened the bowling and created a couple of half chances in the first two overs although they weren’t able to break through the Bromsgrove defence in their first spell.  Next into attack was T. Falkingham (1wkt) and M. Varley, Thomas bowled fast and a good length which paid off, taking our first wicket of the season clean bowling their opener!

On came the spinners and H. Bletsoe (2wkt) and J. Webb (4wkt) who both wove their magic webs (!)  and wickets began to tumble. (J. Webb taking a wicket with his first ball!)

Our fielding was tight and the effort and enthusiasm was top draw although we will need to work on our catching as these chances were not taken. Thankfully, we weren’t punished for these mistakes but next time we might not be as lucky.

After 30 overs Bromsgrove posted a score of 104 for 7.

After tea R. Giles (6) and H. Bletsoe (30) to the crease and opened our innings with some sensible shots and intelligent running between the wickets. It was the perfect start but then wickets then began fall, with C. Hurley (3), W. Richards (0).  Next to the crease was O. Robinson (29*) who batted very sensibly and anchored one end. A number of team visited the middle although they weren’t able to occupy the crease for any great length of time. T. Falkingham (3) was unlucky to be run out but as the game was getting closer to the end the run rate was important.  Up stepped the forgotten batsman, J. Walker (6*) who played straight drive and scored his first four in the 1st XI, it was a lovely drive! O. Robinson and J. Walker knocked off the winning runs with two overs to spare and one wicket in hand. Phew!

This was a good win which we nearly let slip away. It’s that age old saying…. ‘catches do win matches’ and I feel we were really let off the hook by Bromsgrove.  Well done, O. Robinson for his anchoring roll and J. Webb for is 4 wickets.

Man of the Match: H. Bletsoe for his bowling (2wkt), fielding and his contribution with the bat (30)!

Next match: Sat. 26th April- Maidwell @ home.
