1st XI success at Oakham

For the third year in a row, BG’s 1st XI won the Oakham tournament held at Oakham school in Rutland.  Despite going a goal down in our first match against Malsis, second half goals from Oliver Robinson (2) and Luca Illien sealed a well-deserved victory.  The boys then spent the evening in the Sports Hall and pool before retiring (early) to bed at the team hotel.

In the morning, BG continued to play some fast, attacking hockey but conceded 2 soft goals from Oakham’s 2 attacks.  Thankfully, James Walker and Ben Barwell added their names to the scoresheet in order to take a point from a game that ought to have been won comfortably.

In our final game against Old Buckenham Hall, we played some wonderful hockey but the heroic efforts of the OBH keeper kept us down to just 2 goals.  The first of these came from the influential Charles Hurley as he wobbled the ball in from a short-corner and then James Walker put the final touch to a Roddy Giles cross.

The whole squad contributed to our success with Will Richards as composed as ever, James Webb snuffing out many a threat and Edmund Krarup growing in confidence at the back.  Tom Winterton and Robbie Astin also gained valuable experience of 1st XI hockey whilst Giles, Hurley and Henry Bletsoe controlled the centre of the park.  Callum Grier, in goal, made a splendid save to deny OBH in our final game.

Henry Bletsoe was later named Player of the Tournament and also picked up the winners’ trophy on behalf of the team.  Oakham hosted the boys, parents and ALB and myself splendidly, the event being just as enjoyable as the first one attended in 2006.
