Candlemas

Candlemas
The Junior Chapel service has celebrated Candlemas Sunday. As well as remembering the presentation of Christ in the temple and the words of Simeon and Anna, together with the themes of darkness turning to light, the children reflected on the day’s place halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, bringing to life Groundhog Day, the winter thaw in Narnia and Chinese New Year. Hymns included Christ be our Light, When Candles are lighted on Candlemas Day and Shine Jesus Shine; the children sang ‘The Father’s Song’ as an anthem.
In his address, Mr Jeremy Goulding, Headmaster of Shrewsbury School, told the story of the Victorian Funambulist Charles Blondin, famous for his high wire feats including crossing Niagra Falls on tightrope.
The proceeds of the collection will be given to the Children’s Society.
