Girls 1st XI defeat Winchester House

The girls 1st XI started the second half of term with a tricky away fixture at Winchester House. They started strongly and looked to dominate the match from the first whistle.

The girls were soon on the attack through the lively forwards to Ellie Lewis and Hannah Hawkesley who were ably supported by Constance Krarup, Cosima Berry, Genevieve Barton and Hannah Brindley in the midfield. Unfortunately, the final pass and the movement off the ball was not up to the standard that they had been producing in the first half of term and therefore chances came and went. The flow of the game was not helped with a couple of injuries in the first half which meant that some of the girls were playing out of position although Charlotte Newman was prepared to play in several positions.

The second half brought a fresh determination from the girls and they looked to set up camp in the Winchester half. The defence moved higher up the pitch to add pressure to the Winchester House defence. There were a few nervy moments when the opposition were able to break through although Brooke Millhouse was quick to react and make her only save of the game. From then on Helen Bewicke-Copley organised the defence well to ensure that no further lapses occurred. Sasha Worrall stayed well back while Alannah O’Donnell pushed forward down the right with Helen Francis playing much higher in the middle. This enabled Cosima a freer role in the middle and it was from one of these excursions from the middle that saw her break down the right wing and put in a pinpoint cross for Hannah Hawkesley to sweep the ball home, just what had been practised the day before in training.

This was the only goal of the game and was a deserved result for the girls after their perseverance and determination to win the game.

Next up for us is Swanbourne House on Saturday.

Well done!
