Colts on the Rampage!
Bilton Grange Colts A and B VII’s v Great Houghton Wednesday 16th January 2008
2008 and it’s the start of the Hockey Season! Our first competitive game of the season was against Great Houghton. With trials and short corner practices completed both teams were eager to play their first game.
The Colts A started strongly with some good attacking Hockey in the first half although there were a number of chances missed and not taken. The goals then start to come with BG scoring twice and Great Houghton clawing one back before half-time. The second half saw BG play simple good passing Hockey and very quickly the goals started to fly in.
The final score was 8-1 with C. Bastable scoring 3, R.Bennett 2, C.Ernest 2 and L.Lakin 1. This was a great start to the season although there is still a lot to work on and build on.
The Colts B played a hard fought first half with some close attempts on the Great Houghton goal. Great Houghton had a number of breaks but they were unable to find the back of the net. At half time both teams were neck and neck at 0-0.
During the second half Great Houghton locked on and found our goal and we allowed them too much space in our final third with some poor marking at the back.
The final score was 4-0 to Great Houghton. A few lessons to be learnt from this first game of the term which we will need to work on before Saturday.
Bilton Grange Colts A and B VII’s v Winchester HouseSaturday 19th January 2008
Derby day! After a terrible week of rain we managed to retain some of the matches on hardplay and astro. Those matches which have been cancelled we are hoping to rearrange in February. Watch this space……!
The Colts A and B went off WHS to play Hockey on a wet and cold Saturday afternoon. After a successful start by the 1st XI it was important that we tried to keep up the winning ways.
The Colts A started off strongly with some good interlinking play and strong tackling by young O. Trotter, R. Bennett dominated the right hand side of the pitch with great pace and skill while L.Lakin ran the midfield showing some silky skills!
At half time BG were winning 2-0 and we looked strong and set to score more goals. In the second half the boys continued to hold their shape and tackle really hard to the frustration of WHS. R.Bennett assisted C.Bastable with a lovely worked ball from the back line and then added to his tally with a sweetly struck short corner. The final score was 5-0 to BG with R.Bennett scoring 2, C.Bastable scoring two and L.Lakin scoring. This was an excellent result and the boys should be encouraged by this but we must not loose sight of the fact we have a tough game against Foremarke Hall on Wednesday.
The Colts B played a strong WHS B team who dominated the game from the start. WHS found the goal very quickly scoring twice in 10 minutes although the boys kept their heads up and fought back hard. Their efforts were rewarded with a goal scored by A. Carr before half time.
WHS came back strongly in the second half scoring a third goal straight away and BG struggled to cope with one of the young WHS boy who showed some skill and time on the ball.
The B’s went onto score another goal by G. Jamieson and we ended up losing 5-2. Mr Pointon (WHS Umpire and Director of Sport) remarked that we weren’t using the width of the pitch and holding our positions. This is an area that we are going to have to improve on if the B’s are to return to winning ways.
Strong performances from the C’s and D’s look likely to challenge and compete for places in the B’s. Competition for places is now hitting a new level; lots of challenges lay ahead for all the whole Colts squad!
