Beaten by Bedford

The Colts C and D, so dominant last week, came up against two talented Bedford teams that showed there is still a lot of work to do this season. The C team were dissected 1-9 and the D team did well to hang on to their 1-3 halftime deficit.

The C side were well and truly taught a lesson, down by 5 at half time. Goalkeeper Daniel Spencer, who barely needed to pad up last week, was constantly under pressure as the BG forwards waited at the front wondering what had happened to last week’s surfeit of possession. It was a lesson: the team needed to get back and defend rather than loiter with intent in the opposition half while Josh Harris and James Tunstall wondered what to do to stop the flood. The second half saw some improvement, but Bedford were organised and put another 4 past poor Daniel, with new wing Guy Jamieson getting a consolation goal. The C team forgot the basics: marking on defence, getting into space on attack and taking set piece plays quickly.

The D team were similarly slow on restarts but did manage to look a little more aggressive. Hard work in the second half kept Bedford from running away with it after the visitors took a 3-1 lead at half time. A competitive second half saw both sides threaten (Kit Eastwood got desperately close) and defend well; it remained 3-1 to Bedford.

With the A and B teams looking more settled, the squad can now start getting to know each other a little better and, hopefully, Bedford at Daventry will be the low point of the season. The teams have a rest this weekend and can prepare thoroughly for next week.
