Section Cross Country

Last Monday, the section cross country took place with the usual hype and excitement that large section events bring. All the pupils were well prepared for the event with regular practice during games sessions and there was a buzz and air of anticipation on the line for each of the races as the runners prepared themselves for a good run to help their sections.

As has become traditional, the seniors went first with the two highest place 5th formers from last year being absent this year. James Webb and Henry Bletsoe set the early place, as they did in the Middles race last year, running strongly from the outset to pull clear from the rest of the pack. Henry kicked for home a long way out and managed to open up a sizeable advantage which he held to finish first thus reversing last year’s result. James held on for second as Ben Barwell finished strongly claiming third. In the girls’ race, Ellie Lewis and Genevieve Barton ran well together for the majority of the course before Ellie pulled away on the last leg to win. Hannah Brindley ran a controlled race to come home in third.

The Middles race produced a very competitive battle with a runner from each of the sections battling it out to come home first. There was never much between the first four runners of Charlie Bastable, Lukas Lakin, Charlie Reeve and David Bewicke-Copley throughout the race and Charlie held on with a strong finish as they finished in that order. The girls’ race was dominated from the start by Alice Bletsoe who won comfortably ahead of Amelia Swaby and Oceane Steward.

Finally, the Juniors competed and wanted to put in a strong performance to impress their older section members. Their race was probably the closest of all of the races. Andrew Carr ran well throughout and held off the challenges Kit Eastwood and Milo Lakin. Mary Bletsoe, not wanting to be upstaged by her older siblings, produced an excellent run to be the first girl home followed by Evie Drew in second and Charlotte Brumpton in third.

Well done to all who took part. Results will be published after the assembly on Saturday during which the overall section winner will be announced.
