Girls 1st XI win at King’s High
The girls 1st XI travelled to King’s High with the intention of blowing away the cobwebs after the Exeat weekend before playing against their Mothers this Saturday.
Valuable practice time was gained prior to the match as the team was able to get onto the pitch before the opposition arrived. On arrival, it was noted by one or two players that they were a small team and as it turns out we were going to play their Under 12s – an unbeaten side with some useful players.
The girls started strongly and were on the attack from the first whistle. By the time 5 minutes had passed they were 2-0 in front with well taken goals from Constance Krarup and Ellie Lewis. This promising start enabled substitutions to be made and players were rolled on and off at regular intervals in order to keep them fresh for the matches later in the term. The substitutions slightly disrupted the flow of play and no further goals came in the first half.
Some changes took place during half time with Frankie Potter coming on to play her first game in the 1st XI. In the second half, the team looked to pass the ball around more and keep it away from the middle. This enabled Hannah Brindley, Poppy Hudson and Constance to run with the ball down the wings and created more space in the middle for Hannah Hawkesley, Cosima Berry and Genevieve Barton. Hannah Hawkesley was able to score two goals in the second half with some tidy finishes. The defence held firm in the last few minutes when a succession of short corners were awarded and Jemima Cole, another debutant, did not have a save to make.
It was a pleasing performance with many of the players having to adapt to new positions and some of the 5th form showing what they can produce ready for next year.
Well done – next up – the Mothers on Saturday.
Following on from the success of last week at the County tournament, the girls will be playing in the final at Bablake astro next Wednesday at 4.30pm. Parental support will be most welcome.
