Strong runs in large fields

For the first time, the Bilton Grange Cross Country team attended the National Prep Schools Cross Country Championships at Malvern College. The runners (and their Mothers) were prepared to give up some of their Exeat weekend (Mothering Sunday) to take on this demanding course. We had 24 runners in total competing in the 4 different races.

All athletes arrived early so that they could walk the course and soon discovered that the terrain was not like what they had previously experienced in Warwickshire with a few more hills and not a level bit of ground until the finishing line.

However, this did not dampen their spirits and in turn they all tackled their respective courses. The Under 11 girls ran first and there were 143 competitors. The girls put in pleasing performances with Alice Bletsoe leading the team home in a creditable 65th place. The other members of the team were Amelia Swaby, Yasmin Walilay, Kate Broad, Oceane Steward and Jessica Eastwood.

The Under 11 boys were due to tackle a slightly longer course and they all ran well with Charlie Reeve leading the sextet home in 34th place. Other members of the team were David Bewicke-Copley, Charlie Bastable, Miles Porter, Andrew Carr and Lukas Lakin. There were over 180 competitors in this race. Overall the team were 9th out of 15 small schools competing.

The Under 13 girls ran the same course as the Under 11 boys and despite being a little nervous and apprehensive before the race produced some pleasing runs. Ellie Lewis (46th) led the group home in a field of more than 115 competitors. Poppy Hudson, Hannah Brindley, Genevieve Barton, Hannah Hawkesley and Constance Krarup were the other runners and all performed very well.

Finally the Under 13 boys got their opportunity to run the demanding 3.6km course and were keen to follow up their pleasing performances at the North Midlands event earlier in the term. They ran well, often working together in pairs to get around the course although Henry Bletsoe produced a fantastic run to finish in 9th position, a remarkable achievement in a field of 125. Strong runs from the rest of the team, consisting of Luca Illien, Ben Barwell, Charles Hurley, Philipp Gerstenberg and James Webb saw the team finish 5th out 9 small schools.

The day was a success as all the runners produced their best in what has been a busy term. Well done to you all and thank you to the parents for letting them attend and bringing them.
