Girls enjoy match against their Mothers

Mothers Hockey
The girls’ hockey season continued with the annual match against their Mothers and the 1st XI were enthusiastic to demonstrate their skills and progress first hand. On the other hand, the Mothers were determined to put up a good performance against their daughters.
The game started brightly with both teams in high spirits and looking to take the initiative. The 1st XI was soon on the attack and went in search of the early break through. However, the Mothers were resolute in defence and continually thwarted their daughters’ efforts. Mrs. Francis organised her defence well and also caused unrest in the girls’ defence due to some clean striking of the ball. When the girls were able to breach the defence they discovered that Mrs. Barwell was once again in fine form to deny the girls. It was not until midway through the first half when Hannah Hawkesley found some space in the ‘D’ to strike to the ball just inside the post to settle the nerves of the girls. The Mothers continued to attack with Mrs. Roberts orchestrating attacks from centre midfield. The daughters were able to repel these attacks with defensive quartet, from Sasha Worrall, Alannah O’Donnell, Helen Francis, Helen Bewicke-Copley and Charlotte Newman, reading the game well and also looking to support the attacks. Ellie Lewis, hassling Mrs. Barwell in goal all afternoon, was able to capitalise on a loose ball shortly before half time to give the girls some breathing space going into the break.
The Mothers came out in the second half enthusiastically and were keen to get at the girls and not to give them time on the ball. A few nervous moments were created with the Mothers exploiting the gaps behind the girls defence as they pushed forward to support the midfield. One such opportunity fell to Mrs. Berry but Brooke Millhouse was quick to come off her line and stop her in her tracks – quite literally! After this moment, the 1st XI looked to use the wings more with Hannah Brindley, Constance Krarup and Poppy Hudson producing some excellent runs and crosses as they rotated time on the pitch. Jess Mason, Cosima Berry and Genevieve Barton worked hard in the middle to regain possession and sets attacks in motion. The Mothers continued to threaten the girls’ defence and it was only when Ellie and Hannah both scored again late in the game that the result was safe.
I would like to say a big thank you to all the Mothers on behalf of your daughters and from myself for agreeing to play and making it such an enjoyable and memorable match. It has become an important game on the fixture list which is due to your willingness to be involved.
The girls now have a busy final week of term with the County Hockey final on Wednesday (4.30pm at Bablake astros, Norman Place), Princethorpe College on Friday and Tudor Hall on Saturday. Parental support for all of these games would be welcomed and much appreciated as the season comes to a close.
