Ten out of ten for Girls 1st XI

Unbeaten!
The girls’ season, county finals aside, was concluded at Tudor Hall on Saturday. They were fired up for the match as they looked to complete an unbeaten season by winning all of their matches.
The game started in an exciting manner with both teams looking to gain the upper hand as the attacks flowed from one end to the other. Cosima Berry worked tirelessly in the midfield and was well supported by Genevieve Barton. At one stage, the ball ended up in the Tudor Hall goal however no attacker was able to get their stick on the ball as it ricocheted off a defender’s stick. Tudor Hall were able force a couple of short corners but resolute defending prevented Jemima Cole, in goal, being called into action. There were a few nervous moments before half time for both defences although the deadlock was not broken.
After a few brief words and advice given at half time, the 1st XI came out at the start of the second half with renewed energy and when in search of goals. The passing became more clinic as they moved the ball around the pitch effectively and efficiently on to the sticks of team mates. Once again, Hannah Brindley and Constance Krarup provided useful outlets on the wings and troubled their opposition’s defence with some direct running. Ellie Lewis and Hannah Hawkesley found space up front and linked well with the wingers as the girls began to take control of the match. Eventually Genevieve found space at the top of the ‘D’ and managed to force the keeper into a save. A scramble ensued and with Ellie and Hannah Brindley looking to force over the line with the latter achieving the feat and being credited with the goal. Minutes later, determined work from Ellie forced a succession of short corners. From one of these, the ball broke free on the right and Constance was able to take advantage and drill the ball home from the narrowest of angles through the narrowest of gaps to double the lead. The last five minutes brought a few scares but the defensive quartet of Helen Bewicke-Copley, Helen Francis, Sasha Worrall and Alannah O’Donnell repelled any attack that came their way. It is not only their defensive duties that deserve recognition as they have regularly been on hand to support attacks as they have pushed forward from the back.
When the final whistle blew, it brought to an end what has been an excellent season for which every girl must be congratulated. They have won all 10 matches that they have played, scoring 27 goals and only conceding 2!
However, this is not the complete end of the season as the girls have the County hockey finals tomorrow afternoon.
Well played to you all on this unbeaten season.
