Humpty Dumpty Goes Sky Diving

As part of national Science and Engineering Week, 4th Form carried out an egg parachute challenge. Pupils were provided with a variety of materials and an egg; and asked to design a parachute system that would allow the egg to withstand a vertical drop of 4.15 m.

There were some interesting and innovative designs as the hopeful engineers lined up to launch their egg from the fire escape. The winners were Will and James whose design was based on the crash helmet principle.

Here are some of the children’s comments:

I think it was a really fun and exciting experience. My egg cracked but I still enjoyed it. Maja

It was the best experiment ever because we won! James

It was great because everybody else’s egg cracked except ours. Will

I enjoyed using the eggs because the experiment was very different to the normal ones. Priya

It was really fun and I liked designing the parachute. Issy

Most people’s eggs cracked and the yolk went all over their hands. Gabriella

I thought the most memorable bit was when Mimi dropped hers and it cracked in the science lab! Becky

It was fun wrapping up the egg. Issy

My favourite part was dropping the egg even though it cracked. Alice D

I enjoyed making and designing the parachute. Charles

I loved it when the egg bounced and cracked!! Alice B

It was so funny watching the parachutes fall and the eggs explode as they hit the ground. Mimi

It was really fun designing the parachute and then testing it with an egg strapped on the bottom. George
