9 Hole Golf Stableford Competition

9 Hole Golf Stableford Competition Against Maidwell Hall

Sunday 27th April 2008

This event was blessed with fine weather for the fourth successive encounter. Both schools fielded quite different teams, as last year’s senior pupils had gone on to pastures new. There was a good, and sometimes excellent, standard of play to keep their faithful followers entertained. This was reflected in a fine set of scores from the twelve boys. There were at least 4 birdies and an eagle!

The scoring system for the day’s play was as follows:

  1. 1 point for triple bogey
  2. 2 points for double bogey
  3. 3 points for bogey
  4. 4 points for par
  5. 5 points for birdie
  6. 6 points for eagle

The longest drive of the day went to Humphrey Fitzroy Newdegate who recorded a fine drive of 212 yards on our long third hole. He went on to score an eagle 3 at this hole for 6 stableford points.  The award for nearest the pin was not awarded, with nobody able to land on the rather elusive 6th green.  The individual event was won by James Waterfield, who is becoming the model of consistency. He produced another super total of 38 points, including a couple of birdies.

Maidwell Hall fielded three 5th formers and three 6th formers whilst BG called upon one 6th former, two 5th formers and three 4th formers. Maidwell Hall’s points total was 149 and Bilton Grange conjured up a creditable 133, with some of our players never having played on a golf course before the event. Well done to all the competitors for contributing so much to a fine match and congratulations to Maidwell Hall for their first win in recent times.

Our players and scores were James Waterfield (captain) 38, Fergus Carmichael 24, William Kilgour 23, Josh Harris 18, Robert Astin 18 and Will Jeffery 12.

Many thanks to all the adults for bringing the children today and for acting as scorers and supporters, the green keeper for preparing the course to such a high standard and for the catering department who laid on another much welcomed match tea. I am once more grateful to Gary Waterfield for providing a powered cart which allowed staff to keep in regular touch with all three matches. My thanks, once again, go to all the children for being good hosts and guests and to James Waterfield for leading the team and on his super, winning points score.

We look forward to welcoming Maidwell Hall back to Bilton Grange in September.

Joe McGrellis.
