Thrilling finish for Colts A
Beachborough 130 for 4 from 26 overs BG 131 for 7 from 24 overs
Following victory over Bromsgrove in a pairs game, the BG Colts took it to the wire against a promising Beachborough side. Beachborough won the toss and opted to bat on a wicket that had something in it for everyone. Beachborough began strongly before Charles Ernest made the breakthrough, clean bowling the opener. Some less-than-accurate bowling and fine batting saw Beachborough through to a total of 130 with Miles Porter being the pick of the BG bowlers, taking 1 for 6 from his 4 overs. James Waterfield took 2 wickets, his spin-bowling leading to a bat-pad catch for the keeper and a splendid slip catch for Josh Harris. Rory Bennett also turned in a miserly performance with the ball, going for just 9 runs, but also saving several with his athletic fielding. Beachborough opted to use every one of their maximum 26 overs, allowing BG 24 overs to either eclipse their total or survive with at least 1 wicket intact.
In reply, both Will Jeffery and Oliver Trotter went cheaply but Jack Rosser was defiant. Jack announced his intentions with a boundary from his first ball and went on to score an undefeated 58. Josh Harris joined him and eventually fell to a superb catch in the covers, having scored 31 priceless runs. Bennett, James Waterfield and Porter fell cheaply before Lukas Lakin came in with 3 balls remaining and 7 runs required to win. 2 leg-byes were recorded as the fielding side panicked and then Lakin smacked the ball to the boundary to level the scores. A scrambled leg-bye was sufficient to snatch victory from the final ball of the match.
This was a splendid team performance from which the Colts will have learnt a great deal.
