Six of the Best
After an excellent start of the athletics track and field to the term, with 13 National standards already achieved by a host of athletes, a 46 pupil strong team travelled to Winchester House for their annual meeting. After the cancellation of last year’s event the athletes were keen to put in excellent performances.
The day started well with Lukas Lakin producing a strong performance in the 70m hurdles to claim the first success of the day. It was then quite a while before our next medal came although this does not detract from the fantastic performances that all the athletes put in with the majority of them achieving seasonal if not personal bests as many narrowly missed out on the top spot by finishing second or third. As the afternoon neared the end, it was pleasing to see more athletes approaching with medals hanging around their necks (Genevieve Barton – javelin, Cosima Berry – high jump, Charlie Bastable – 200m and Henry Bletsoe – 1500m). As we entered the relays, we were looking for one more medal to equal our haul of 2 years ago and every relay team put in excellent performances. However, most notably the Under 12 boys’ team transferred the baton effortlessly and smoothly around the track to win their race comfortably and claim the 6th success of the afternoon. The Under 14 girls then narrowly missed out on the 7th as they ran well in their relay.
Well done to all that took part, it was especially pleasing to see the team spirit and the support and encouragement that you gave to each other when you were not competing.
