Hurley Hits-Out But Oakham Orchestrate A Narrow Win
On one of the best grounds and wickets in the country the scene was set for a competitive game of Cricket as both teams knew what was at stake! Pride, Passion and a victory! The format was 30/30, win/loose.
Oakham won the toss and elected to put us into bat. A new partnership of H. Bletsoe (7) and O. Robinson (28) took to the crease. We started off positively and saw off the first few overs hitting the bad ball, O. Robinson playing some strong pull shots which helped move our total along steadily.
Oakham bowled straight and on a good length and although we didn’t seemed troubled by their bowling, retrospectively, we should have pushed more singles and worked the field.
O. Robinson continued to play attacking shots and ask questions of the Oakham bowling and then H. Bletsoe (7) got trapped by a low straight delivery and out walk C.Hurley (81*) with a point to prove!
Charles batted superbly and it was a master class of stroke play and finding the gaps in the field. He saw himself in for a couple of overs and then began to pick off the bowlers hitting an array of 4’s and straight 6’s!!! W. Richards(19*) joined Charles with 10 overs to spare and played a supportive role anchoring one end while Charles punished the bad ball!! C. Hurley went on to hit an unbeaten 81 with W. Richards scoring 19 after the 30 overs. We posted a respectable score of 155 for 2.
After tea C.Hurley (2) and T.Falkingham (1) opened up the bowling for BG, putting Oakham under a lot of pressure, the atmosphere was electric on the square! The brake through came by T.Falkingham and then in the next over C. Hurley removed their other opener who we knew he was going to be a major threat against us.
M. Varley and D.Craven (2) then came into the attack and although at first they both struggled to find their form at first, D.Craven then went on to take his first wicket of the season and then he followed it up with an LBW in this third over.
Oakham continued to keep the pressure on us and run rate going although we were unlucky with balls going in the air into gaps and shots cutting past both leg and off stump! Despite every effort to protect our total, Oakham’s middle order batted well and took them to victory with 5 wickets in hand and two overs to spare.
This was a fantastic afternoon of Cricket, where, two good sides battled it out to win, unfortunately, we didn’t quite score enough runs, or, have a bit of luck to wobble and unsettle Oakham.
Man of the Match: Charles Hurley for his stunning, unbeaten 81.
Next Match: Foremarke Hall @ Home, 2:15 start.
Followed by: 20/20 style festival @ Malvern College this Sunday!
