Informal Concert Report

Informal Concert - Thursday 9th October 2008 This evening of music was started by Lucy Hayes, who provided a lovely opening number on the piano with Hofmann’s Walroglein, setting a high standard for the rest of the concert!  Throughout the evening we saw many piano solos of different genres, from jazzy numbers such as ‘Your First Hit Single’, performed by Michael Johnson, to well-known classics such as Joplin’s ‘The Entertainer’, played by Alice Park. We also heard less well-known pieces such as a beautiful French piece called ‘Chant de la Creuse’ played by Lydia Kember, and some short pieces such as ‘My Laughing Chimpanzee’, performed by Antony Howard, and ‘Sailors’ Hornpipe’, played by Eve Marshall.  We also saw 6 year old Ethan Shum from pre-prep give a stunning performance of Vivaldi’s ‘Autumn’ on the piano, and look forward to hearing more from him in the future. There were several clarinet solos, all of which were performed to a very high standard and enjoyed by all. In particular, Juliet Smith’s very musical performance of ‘Sicilienne’ was greatly enjoyed. In contrast to the otherwise solo programme, we heard Alice Park and Julia Molloy performing piano duets with their teacher Mrs Heathcote, and providing yet more variety to the programme were guitar solos, voice solos and flute solos. Yasmin Walilay performed ‘Buggy’ beautifully on her flute, and Catherine Winterton gave a lovely rendition of ‘Song of the Birds’. We also heard Amelia Bebbington play ‘Dance of the Snowman’ on her violin, a very challenging piece which she performed wonderfully, and Celine Flowers finished off the concert with a jolly ‘Hornpipe’. In all, the evening was a showcase of the children’s’ talents, and was clearly much enjoyed by the wonderful audience.  It was brilliant to see all of the performers introducing their pieces in loud, clear voices, and appreciating their audience with a bow at the end. We look forward to hearing more music at our next informal concert on Tuesday 21st October. NKW (BG Music Assistant)
