Colts A fail to nick it at the end.
The last few minutes were agonizing as the Colts desperately tried to find a way through the Akeley Wood defence, only to find that time was running out. The final whistle blew and Akeley Wood breathed a huge sigh of relief as they managed to hang on 21-19. BG can take great heart from this match, as they finally started to believe in themselves and really got to grips with their forward and their back play in particular. Now they have worked out the team’s strengths and weaknesses, the boys can develop their play after the half term break, and build on this performance. The game started well with some very strong running from David Bewicke-Copley and BG very nearly crossed the line, but Akeley responded with a break from their lightning fast centre, who tore our defence to shreads to run the length of the pitch to score a remarkable try. However, BG battled back and Ben Taylor crashed over the line score the first try. Unfortunately Tom Brindley failed to convert, with the ball just going under the crossbar by a whisker, but the rest of the team gave some stout encouragement that was very pleasing to hear. Akeley then scored some good tries as BG defence started to look a little shaky, with their speedy centre scoring another scintillating try, but Neil Taylor bashed his way over, this time Tom adding the conversion. During the second half the Taylor boys combined brilliantly down the touchline, with Neil feeding Ben for him to score his second of the game. Brindley added the conversion to take the score to 21-19. The Akeley team looked jaded as our forwards took control to feed the backs and some very strong running from Daniel Spencer and Andrew Carr nearly broke the defence, but the final winning pass didn’t go to hand on many occasions. Time finally ran out, but the boys played with a wonderful spirit, and they can be really proud of the way they kept going all the way to the final whistle, given the last few weeks of disappointment. Very well done BG. BJH
