Recent defeats in the 12-a-side version of the game (though we failed to score against Spratton, the outcome was decided by just one try and the game was one of the most competitive I have ever seen at this level) were put to the back of the mind as the 7-a-side version became the point of focus. The Colts reached the semi-final of the inaugural Rugby School 7’s tournament but went down by 4 tries to a speedy Oratory outfit. Earlier, BG managed to draw with Akeley Wood, Joe Anderson touching down just as time ran out. Akeley then defeated Winchester House by two converted tries to one, leaving BG with a target of victory over WH by two tries in order to qualify.
BG began magnificently with the front three of Hugo Swaby, Ollie Jacques and George Willmott winning lots of ball, whilst strong tackling from Jacob Hardy-King, Anderson and Milo Lakin in the backs prevented House from making any sort of breakthrough. Anderson skipped through to score BG’s first and Oliver Rogerson converted. Thomas Jenkins and Harry Smith replaced Hardy-King and Swaby respectively, and both made an impact on the game. It was Willmott who nearly drove over for the decisive try but popped the ball to Rogerson to score and he again converted, giving BG the margin of victory required.
In the final, on the famous Close at Rugby School, Harry Cash at fly-half ensured that our speed merchants got plenty of ball, but BG attacks were thwarted and Oratory’s ability to counter, by getting the ball instantly to their speedy winger, put paid to any hopes of reaching the final. Heads never dropped and the boys can be proud of their achievement.
