U13 boys qualify for National Hockey Finals

The Under 13 boys put in some fine performances to secure a place at the IAPS national hockey finals in March.

A sluggish start nearly cost BG that coveted place but Oliver Robinson equalised a stunning Malsis strike to take a point from our first group game.  Dean Close presented a formidable challenge and, although BG worried the favourites for the title in the early exchanges, a deficit of 4 goals made the task of qualifying a difficult one.  With 2 games to play, nothing less than 6 points would suffice and Robinson was again on target, scoring both goals in a 2 nil victory.  In the final group game, in which victory was required for qualification for the semi-finals, BG went behind Old Buckenham Hall early on.  The response was almost immediate and goals from Rory Bennett, Robbie Astin and Robinson helped to secure a semi-final slot.

Bromsgrove, the winners of the other qualifying group, provided the opposition but by full-time neither side had been able to alter the original scoreline.  Astin, Robinson and Roddy Giles stepped forward to take penalty strokes and Astin, correctly opting to go first, netted his magnificently.  Mark Kashinskiy then pulled off an excellent save to deny Bromsgrove before Robinson extended the lead to 2 goals.  Bromsgrove scored, leaving Kashinskiy with no chance, so it was down to Giles to score to take the team into the final.  The ball crept slowly towards the goal line and just managed to sneak in as the keeper struggled to reach it.  Bilton Grange would, once again, be heading to Millfield.  In the final, we again lost out to Dean Close, but not before Charlie Bastable had opened the scoring with a wonderful strike.

All the players made splendid contributions to the success of the team.  The squad comprised Oliver Vartan, Lucas Lakin, Rory Molloy, Josh Harris, Kashinskiy, Giles, Astin, Bennett, Robinson and Bastable.

Well done boys!
