9 hole golf Stableford Competition against Maidwell Hall

Mr McGrellis, Head of Golf, reports from the Bilton Grange Golf Course; This event was blessed once more with fine weather. Both schools fielded some new talent and the standard of golf was extremely high indeed. This was reflected in the highest team scores from twelve boys that have been recorded in the last five years.

The scoring system for the day’s play was as follows:

  • 1 point for triple bogey
  • 2 points for double bogey
  • 3 points for bogey
  • 4 points for par
  • 5 points for birdie
  • 6 points for eagle

The longest drive of the day went to Humphry Fitzroy Newdegate who recorded a fine drive of between 255 and 260 yards on our long third hole.

The award for nearest the pin has been made just once in the previous three meetings of the two schools, with the 6th green proving to be rather elusive. This was the case once again, although a few of the boys came close.

The individual event was won by Julian Martin-Smith who played some fantastic golf and was playing for Maidwell’s golf team for the first time! He produced a fabulous total of 40 stableford points. James Waterfield ran Julian extremely close with 39 points, having lost a ball after a good drive down the right side of the third; that penalty shot was to be very significant in the final analysis.

Maidwell Hall’s points total was a superb 198 and Bilton Grange conjured up a very creditable 170, a score that would have won many of the previous encounters. Well done to all the competitors for contributing so much to a fine match and congratulations to Maidwell Hall for this fine win.

Our players and scores were James Waterfield (captain) 39, Oliver Robinson 31, Josh Harris 29, Rory Bennett 28, Hugo Swaby 24 and Fergus Carmichael 19.

Many thanks go to all the adults and staff for bringing the children today and for acting as scorers and supporters, the green keeper for preparing the course to such a high standard and for the catering department who laid on another much welcomed match tea. I am once more grateful to Gary Waterfield for providing a powered cart which allowed staff to keep in regular touch with all three matches. My thanks, once again, go to all the children for being good hosts and guests.

We look forward to welcoming a new Maidwell Hall team in September.
