A Close Encounter

The most recent match for the Colts B was against King Henry VIII played in more seasonal weather conditions than previous matches. The cold then damp conditions did not aid a fluent passing game and contributed to a number of knock ons by both sides.

The Colts B started strongly and soon found weaknesses in the opposition defence. Elusive powerful running from both the backs and the forwards was demonstrated as they surged into the King Henry VIII’s half. At the end of two such breaks Antony Howard and Hector Hilleary, making his debut for the Colts B, ran in tries both of which were converted with aplomb by Thomas Pearson. However, the opposition came back strongly after a brief word from their coach and, unfortunately, our own defensive frailties came to light and soon the advantage had been reduced. The conversion was missed which later proved crucial.

After the half time team talk, which eventually took place after what became a procession of laces being tied on the sidelines, the Colts B came out determined to regain the upper hand. This was partially achieved with the forwards battling hard with success in both the line outs and the scrums. This enabled the backs to get on the front foot as they looked to pass the ball more effectively out to the wings. However, a breakaway converted try after some more missed tackles let the pressure off and the match was once again in the balance.

With the second half ticking by, Thomas Pearson made a break and despite two opponents hanging onto the back of his shirt, he was still able to force his way over for a try which he converted.  Once again the nerves settled until with just over a minute left, the King Henry fly half took advantage of a large blindside to run unchallenged in at the corner. This is when the earlier missed conversion proved vital as Bilton Grange had a two point advantage and just had to see out play although Thomas nearly secured the win with a great solo effort that saw him denied in the corner. Final score 21-19.

The next opposition is Winchester House on Saturday and the team will need to work hard on a few areas in training beforehand.
