Colts B go down fighting

The Colts B’s most recent match was against Winchester House. Their cause was not helped by the loss of a couple of players on the morning of the match through illness and injury. As a result, players were forced to play in positions to which they were unaccustomed to. However, they were always willing and the commitment and efforts was faultless.

One key area that was practised in training after our victory against King Henry VIII was tackling and it certainly paid off as the boys certainly got into the faces of the opposition with some powerful and effective tackles.

The first half was a balanced affair with both sides competing hard for the ball and looking to gain the upper hand. Unfortunately, the forwards, affected by the absences, were unable to secure possession for the backs although worked hard to prevent the opposition from getting clean ball to their strong backline. Chances came to both sides and the Colts B were unfortunate that they could not capitalise on some of the chances that they had and went into half time 12-0 down.

A few positional changes at half time gave the pack a bit more strength and this was clearly evident in the scrums as they started to win their own ball. However, a couple of sleepy moments meant that the boys had an uphill struggle ahead of them.

Nevertheless, the Colts B did not let heads drop and raised their game for the last ten minutes. In fact, they dominated the territory and possession. Winchester House were forced onto the back foot and their efforts were rewarded when the scrum won the ball against the head (emphasising their improvement) which gave Thomas Pearson the space he needed to score a well deserved consolation try which he duly converted (26-7). It was no less than what the team deserved.

Many of the Colts B will be involved in the Bilton Grange Under 10 festival which is on Wednesday, 1.30pm start.
