10th November 2015
Displaying the ‘best qualities of rugby’, the U10 festival was an enjoyable and competitive afternoon of prep school rugby. The honours guard, three cheers, referee appreciation and excellent team play on the pitch was a joy to watch and all seven schools deserve to be proud of their excellent performances.
The Bilton Grange team got off to a great start with a 20-0 victory against the Croft; a brace of tries from Augustus were added to by tries from Jimmy and Ben apiece. Against Spratton Hall the result was 0-0 with the winners being the defensive commitment of both teams. A 5-0 victory over Eversfield (scorer Jimmy) was then followed up with a 15-0 victory over Akeley Wood (Jimmy x 2, Finlay). With two matches to go our results sheet was looking very promising. We knew our match versus Wellingborough could decide the overall winners and we got off to a great start with Jimmy scoring in the first phase of play. After this, both teams defended well but we missed a tackle out wide to let our opposition equalise just before the final whistle. Needing to win our last match to win the festival, we managed to beat Beachborough 20-0 and it was great to see all the squad get onto the pitch and represent the team.
We finished with four wins and two draws and it should be noted that Spratton Hall and Wellingborough finished with the same record. All three teams were deserved victors but as is so often the way, the festival was decided by total points difference. Having only conceded one try and scoring fourteen, our points difference was the best, placing us in 1st place. With delighted boys we won back our shield and although it may have taken some time, I do hope the boys finally got the mud off their knees!
Our thanks to everyone who helped organise the festival and special thanks to Mr Allen, Mr Hodge and Mr de Bruin.
