This week the Juniors have been investigating fractions through the eating of cake.
They have been defining fractions and learning the correct terminology and then using cake to explore proper fractions and their equivalents. Before the feast they checked their cake was still complete (8/8 = 1) by adding the fractions, using both common denominators and using the equivalent fractions rule to sum mixed fractions.
Finally, using their new knowledge they were then able to eat (or subtract fractions thereof) the cake. They were able to work out how much would be left or what would happen or how do I solve ½ – ¼ (no Juniors, you don’t just eat a ½)!
