23rd March 2016
On the morning of Saturday 19 March, the Senior Chapel Choir travelled to the Butterworth Hall in the Warwick Arts Centre to audition for Choir of the Year 2016. As well as singing for the audition, the Chapel Choir was lucky to take part in a warm-up and later a workshop with David Lawrence, respected choral conductor.
With only 28 singers, we were one of the smallest choirs in the morning session, and yet the choir received compliments on the warmth and projection of a beautiful sound. Ralph Allwood, one of the adjudicators and previously Director of Music at Eton College, praised the choir’s communication of text, musical phrasing and responsiveness to direction. There was much discussion among choristers about other choirs as well, with many useful ideas taken from the morning.
Although we did not proceed to the national selection stage, the choristers sang incredibly well, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience of singing to a wider audience in such a large venue. We look forward to further honing our skills in future competitions. Thanks are due to Mr Pham for providing piano accompaniment, and to Mr Gunn and Mrs Osiatynski for driving and supporting.
