25th May 2016
On Sunday 15 May, 36 singers from Bilton Grange decamped to Rugby School for the RSCM Singing Afternoon for Young People, expertly led by Rugby’s Director of Music, Mr Richard Tanner. Our choristers were joined by others from St Mark’s in Bilton, as well as pupils from Rugby School.
The rehearsals were full of interesting and useful singing tips from Mr Tanner, who was impressed by pupils’ ability to learn slightly unfamiliar music so quickly. The event culminated in a sung Evensong in Rugby School’s beautiful Chapel. We sang a wide selection of music, including Tallis’ If Ye Love Me, plainsong responses and a psalm. The experience of singing with tenor and bass support was a valuable one for our trebles. A well-sized congregation was treated to a singing workshop at the start of the service, helping them to join in with the hymns during the service.
Thank you to Mr Richard Tanner for running this excellent workshop, to Ms Patsy Howes for organising it, to Mr James Williams, Head of Academic Music at Rugby School, for playing the organ, and to Mr David Noble to accompanying and singing.
