The View From Study 18 September 2026
One of the great strengths of Bilton Grange being part of the Rugby School Group is the opportunity it provides for collaboration, shared thinking and friendship with schools across the world. A return visit to Rugby School Thailand over the last few days has reminded me of how much there is to learn and gain from each other.
RST is in excellent shape, full of happy children and dedicated staff. It was a particular pleasure to see two Old Biltonians flourishing as they continue their education in Thailand, as well as Mrs Burley who, having said goodbye to her Year 3 class at BG in June, welcomed a new Year 3 cohort at RST just a couple of weeks ago. She sends her best wishes to everyone and confirms that the ability to move between schools which share common values and aspirations, whilst operating in very different cultural settings, is a significant attraction.
Thailand is often referred to as the “Land of Smiles”, but beneath that welcoming reputation lies something deeper – respect – which is woven into everyday life. Children are taught from an early age the importance of gratitude, humility and consideration for others. And, because of this, respect appears naturally as a habit of mind, a way of approaching relationships and community life. There is a strong desire to value others, preserve harmony and act with dignity and courtesy. In a world that can sometimes feel hurried and divided, these qualities make a lasting impression.
There are parallels with what we seek to achieve at Bilton Grange which is why two Thai OBs who attended the school in the 1990s, and who I met for the first time last night, spoke so fondly of their time at the school. We want our children to become thoughtful young people who listen carefully, treat others kindly, value different perspectives and contribute positively to their communities. Respect is not about always agreeing with one another; it is about recognising the value of every person we encounter.
Among the many useful conversations this week was one regarding BG’s proposed Year 7 visit to Rugby School Thailand in October 2027. The plan is for a group of pupils from each school to swap places for approximately ten days, experiencing both the educational opportunities and the culture of each other’s country. Shared values, but different experiences! And whether travelling or not in October next year, all of the Year 7 pupils will having something to gain from the collaboration including a greater understanding of what it means to respect others.
I have now moved on to Hong Kong for the weekend where I shall be continuing to strengthen links with past, present and future members of our community.
