Wellbeing
At Bilton Grange Pre-Prep, we recognise that emotional wellbeing is the foundation upon which all learning is built. Young children who feel safe, understood, and equipped to manage their emotions are better able to engage with the world around them, build positive relationships, and develop resilience that will serve them throughout their lives.
Our approach to wellbeing is comprehensive and research-informed, weaving together complementary programmes that work in harmony to support every child’s emotional development.
A whole-child approach
Zones of Regulation provides our youngest learners with a clear, visual framework for understanding their emotions. Through the language of colours – blue, green, yellow, and red zones, children learn to identify how they’re feeling and begin to recognise the physical sensations that accompany different emotional states. This awareness is the first step towards self-regulation, helping children to communicate their needs and develop strategies for returning to a calm, focused state when big feelings arise.
Building on this foundation, My Happy Mind introduces children to neuroscience in age-appropriate ways, teaching them how their brains work and how they can actively support their own mental health. Through engaging weekly sessions and daily mindfulness practices, such as Happy Breathing, children learn about gratitude, appreciation, and the power of positive thinking. They discover that wellbeing is something they can cultivate, not simply something that happens to them.
Uniquely at Bilton Grange, our Super Skills programme celebrates the learning behaviours that underpin both academic success and emotional wellbeing. Through engaging animal characters, children learn to embrace challenges, collaborate with others, persevere when things are difficult, and develop curiosity about the world.
We understand that sometimes children need more than classroom strategies, they need a physical sanctuary where they can step away from the bustle of school life and simply be. My Happy Space provides exactly this: a dedicated wellbeing environment where children can find calm when the playground feels overwhelming or emotions feel too big to manage alone.
Practical support, every day
These programmes are not delivered as separate lessons but are integrated throughout the school day. If a child is struggling in the yellow zone for example, teachers might guide them to use a breathing strategy from My Happy Mind or suggest a visit to My Happy Space. During collaborative work, Teamwork Tiger reminds children of the power of working together.
Our staff are trained to use the language and strategies, creating a common vocabulary that helps children feel understood and supported. Parents are introduced to these frameworks so the same approaches can be reinforced at home, creating a genuine partnership in supporting each child’s emotional development.
